Viviane Sassen (1972, Amsterdam) is an internationally renowned artist known not only for her autonomous photography but also for her commissioned work in the fashion world. Sassen was awarded the Prix de Rome in 2007 and the Infinity Award of the International Center of Photography in New York in 2011. Some of her earliest memories are of life in Kenya, where she spent three years as a child. When her family returned to the Netherlands in 1978, Sassen was troubled: “I didn’t feel like I belonged in Europe, and yet I knew I was a foreigner in Africa Viviane Sassen. Sassen was born in 1972 in Amsterdam, and lives there. She studied fashion design, followed by photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) and Ateliers Arnhem. Venus & Mercury, a solo exhibition by the artist took place at Huis Marseille, occupying all fourteen of the museum’s galleries as well as its garden. Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen has garnered parallel critical acclaim as a fashion photographer and in the context of contemporary visual art.
